Lesson Plan
Characteristics of Living Things
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify and list the basic characteristics of living things.
- Distinguish between living and non-living things.
- Compare major groups of living things (Plants vs Animals).
- Explain similarities and differences using a Venn Diagram.
Required Materials
- Textbook (General Science Grade 4)
- Flashcards showing different animals and plants
- Chart paper and markers
- Real-life examples (a potted plant, a picture of a pet)
Introduction (5 Mins)
Start the class by asking students about their journey to school. "What did you see on your way? Was the car alive? Was the stray cat alive? Why?"
Main Activity (20 Mins)
Part 1: The 6 Pillars of Life
Explain the six key characteristics mentioned in the textbook:
- Food: Living things need energy.
- Breathing: Respiration is vital.
- Movement: Ability to move on their own.
- Reproduction: Producing offspring.
- Growth: Getting bigger and stronger.
- Sensing: Reacting to the environment.
Activity 1.1: Compare and Contrast
Divide the class into pairs. Using the "Mango Tree vs. Goat" example, fill the Venn Diagram below.
Green Color
Make own food
Cannot move place to place
Grow
Respire
Reproduce
Various Colors
Depend on others for food
Can move freely
Student Practice (10 Mins)
Ask students to list 3 things in the classroom that are living and 3 that are non-living. Then, for the living things, ask them to identify one similarity they share with a plant.
Review & Summary (5 Mins)
Recap the major groups (Plants and Animals). Highlight that while they look different, they share the basic processes of life (Growth, Respiration, Reproduction).
🏠 Homework Assignment
1. Draw a picture of your favorite animal and your favorite plant in your notebook.
2. Write down three differences between them based on what we learned today.
3. Bonus: Find one non-living thing at home that "moves" and explain why it is still not a living thing.
